What Is Executive AI Coaching?
It's not a workshop where someone explains what GPT stands for. It's structured, hands-on enablement where your executive team uses AI on their real work, with a coach who understands both the technology and the Australian regulatory environment.
The coaching programme covers three phases:
Phase 1: Personal AI Fluency (Weeks 1-2). Every executive gets a paid AI licence and completes the 48-Hour Challenge: open Claude or ChatGPT, prompt it with "Interview me and help me find all the ways AI could help me in my role." Start using AI to learn AI. Build a personal context file that captures their voice, preferences, and recurring tasks.
Phase 2: Workflow Integration (Weeks 3-4). Move from exploration to production. Five tests every executive should run: Research Replacement (weekly briefing in one prompt), Document Drafter (AI interviews you before writing), Financial Model (Excel formulas, not hardcoded), Process Encoder (turn SOPs into reusable skills), and the Uncomfortable One (which functions are most exposed to restructuring in 12 months).
Phase 3: Organisational Leadership (Weeks 5-8). Translate personal fluency into team-level capability. Set AI adoption metrics. Build the governance vocabulary needed for board discussions. Evaluate AI investments with the Revenue vs Cost filter: does it meaningfully increase revenue or meaningfully displace costs? If neither, it's noise.
Why Coaching Matters More Than Training
Most Australian organisations lack role-specific AI training. But the issue isn't a training deficit. It's a leadership deficit.
Training teaches people how tools work. Coaching teaches leaders how to think about AI in their specific context. The difference shows up in outcomes: trained teams use AI for email rewrites and meeting summaries (surface usage). Coached leaders build context files, configure workflows, and restructure cost lines (superuser behaviour).
Companies with AI superusers get materially more output per head than surface users. The gap between a surface user and a superuser isn't intelligence or technical skill. It's configuration. The folder structure, the context files, the plugins. One well-written context file is worth more than 50 clever prompts.
I've watched a client cancel three junior analyst hires ($195K per year) after a Claude demo during coaching. Claude Pro costs $20 per month. That's not a productivity gain. That's a cost structure shift your competitors are already pricing in.
The Reasoning Model Habit
One coaching outcome changes everything: executives learn to use reasoning models instead of base models.
Most executives default to the fastest AI response. That's a base model. It produces adequate but generic output. Reasoning models (like Claude in extended thinking mode) take longer but produce output that accounts for nuance, complexity, and context.
I tell every executive I coach: if you're only going to change one habit, use reasoning models for anything that matters. That single shift solves 99% of quality complaints about AI output.
Voice mode is useful for meeting prep and on-the-go learning, but it trades reasoning ability for speed. Know when to use each.
Who This Is For
- CEOs who approve AI budgets but don't use AI themselves
- CFOs who need to evaluate AI ROI with firsthand understanding
- Board directors who need AI governance fluency
- Executive teams transitioning from AI curiosity to AI advantage
- C-suite leaders in financial services facing ASIC and APRA scrutiny
The coaching isn't for your IT team. It's for the people making investment decisions, governance decisions, and strategic decisions about AI. If your executives can't use AI to draft a board paper, evaluate a vendor claim, or stress-test a financial model, they're making decisions without understanding the tool they're buying.
