What does an AI consultant do?
An AI consultant helps leaders decide which AI work to fund and which work must change. The consultant also sets how the result will be measured and who owns it.
How should we compare AI advisers?
Compare any adviser on the decision the work buys, who does the work, what is excluded and how implementation is handled. Our guide to what changes the cost of AI strategy work lists the questions to ask before you approve a proposal.
Where should we start with AI?
Start with the need you have now. If people have AI tools but use them unevenly, start with a Practical AI Workshop. If you have many AI ideas and no clear priority, start with an AI Opportunity Audit. If the opportunities are known and need a funded plan, start with the AI Roadmap. If one workflow is costing you, start with an Operational AI Audit. The AI Readiness Assessment is a quick first check if you are unsure.
Do we need a business case before we talk to you?
You can start without a business case, because building it is part of the work. An AI business case names the outcome, the baseline and the value mechanism. It also names the full cost of building, running and governing the change, and the owner of the benefit. It reports released time as capacity until someone decides where that time goes, as our note on defending an AI time saving explains.
How do we know whether an AI idea is feasible?
Test it against the work. Check whether the workflow is understood and whether the information it needs is accurate, current and lawfully available. Then check whether quality can be judged and whether someone can make the change happen. Where feasibility is uncertain and the value is material, a small bounded test resolves the question before larger spending. In what order should we do things?
Sequence by value and by dependency. Some uses share data, controls or platform work, and others can be tested on their own. Start with a scope the organisation can supervise and measure, resolve its dependencies, then expand when the evidence supports it.
Should we build our own AI or buy it?
Test what you already own first. Ask the owner of your existing platforms to produce the result with software you already pay for. That includes any Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini licences. If a real gap remains, a bounded internal test shows the build, hosting and support effort. Compare that with the vendor's price and the internal work buying would still need. Either way, keep ownership of your product knowledge and service standards inside the business. How do you handle responsible AI and risk?
We assess each use for its effect on people, the information it uses, the decisions it makes or informs and what happens when it fails. The delivery team builds the controls into the workflow and tests them. Specialists assess the legal, privacy and security questions. For decisions that may fall within APP 1.7, the APP 1.7 Rapid Review maps them and prepares draft inputs for legal review.
Is the work delivered remotely or on site?
Most of the work runs remotely. We travel for workshops, readouts and key meetings, and agree the arrangement when we scope the work.
